We were asked to look for a scholarly article on the advantages of instructional technology on learner achievement. I have personally been working on finding ways of introducing word recognition and phonics in early childhood literacy. So I came across the article in the ProQuest library, “E-books Are Magical”, by Jamie Smith. The article discusses various authors and electronic books that are available via internet or by other resources for all ages and even disabilities such as someone who is blind. It also went over how Dr. Seuss books now are electronically interactive. These books can be useful for introducing the youngest of children into reading, even before they begin school. Many of these electronic interactive books have matching, phonics, and math games imbedded in them and you can even interact with the characters.
This example of learning technology would be a great start to early childhood reading and a great way to keep the children interested in not only reading but also learning along the way. In today’s society, we are in a way “forced” to adapt to all these technological advances and our children in pretty much born into it now, we might as well evolve our teaching practices to fit the children’s ways of life we bred them into. It is imperative that we keep children interested, if phonics and word recognition can be learned through E-books, then let us teach it. If E-books are a great way for children to learn to read, then that is what we got to do to make it happen, everyone learns in different ways, this may be a beneficial way to help the majority of learners, it is about making sense of what is on the page, in whatever method is necessary. As the author stated, “We learn to read and then we read to learn. It is we, the mature generation, who must make the step to embrace new electronic ways of doing things because, if we don't teach young people what the difference is between what is good and what is bad in the electronic world, who will?”
Here is a website link that I had done in a previous class. It has some links and a video that goes over word recognition and phonic in early childhood reading, through interactive books. I will be redesigning more as I also learn about the benefits.
